Donovan the Baby Elephant

Here it is… my first ever pattern. I’ve been wondering what to do with this yarn for ages, and it just clicked! I used Scheepjes Stonewashed yarn (Blue apatite) and Catona (off-white). But you can use any yarn, with the crochet needle described on your yarn label. You will be needing two colors, as well as an embroidery needle to attach the different parts. Good luck!

Repeats are indicated using *….*: repeat everything between the marks until you have as many repetitions as stated behind the mark. For this pattern, work all stitches through both loops, unless indicated otherwise. Start with your main color, unless stated otherwise.

Front legs (Make 2) (Start with white)
Round 1            Make a magic ring; make 6 sc in the magic ring (6)
Round 2            2 sc in every sc from the previous round (12)
Round 3            *2 sc in the next sc; 1 sc*6 times (18)
*Switch color*
Round 4 18 sc in BL (18)
Round 5-6 18 sc (18)
Round 7 7 sc, sc2tog, 1 sc, sc2tog, 6 sc (16)

Tail
Create a magic ring with a tail long enough to attach the elephant’s tail to its body.
Round 1            Make a magic ring; make 6 sc in the magic ring (6)
Round 2-7 6 sc (6)
Round 8 *1 sc, sc2tog* twice (4)
Round 9-16 4 sc (4)
Optional: securely attach loose strands of yarn to the tail’s end.
Fasten off.

Fold and stitch the ears, leaving a tail long enough to attach to the head.
Colored semicircles (white)
Row 1 Make a magic ring; 4 sc in magic ring, ch1 (4)
Now turn your work, as you will crochet the semicircles in rows. Ch1 after each to keep the number of stitches equal.
Row 2            2 sc in every sc from the previous round, ch1 (8)
Row 3            *2 sc in the next sc; 1 sc*4 times, ch1 (12)
Row 4             *2 sc in the next sc; 2 sc*4 times, ch1 (16)
Row 5           *2 sc in the next sc; 3 sc*4 times, ch1 (20)
Row 6            *2 sc in the next sc; 4 sc*4 times, ch1 (24)
Row 7            *2 sc in the next sc; 5 sc*4 times, ch1 (28)
Stitch the semicircles onto the folded ears; attach the ears to the body.
